Yonan Cultural Center
Yonan Cultural Center
The 13,926 square-foot Pueblo of Isleta Yonan Cultural Center is managed by the Department of Cultural and Historic Preservation. The cultural center is inside the building that was once the Isleta Elementary School. The school was built around the 1930-40s and operated until 2008. In 2012, the cultural center began housing the DCHP and Cultural Committee.
Inside are a multi-use classroom, research library, exhibition gallery, lecture hall, and archive that includes 1,207 square feet of climate-controlled storage and workspace. Yonan utilizes a range of creative community-based knowledge-sharing practices not only to preserve Isleta’s past, but also to facilitate the continuation of Isleta’s cultural traditions into the future, with a focus upon relationship to land, intergenerational cultural transference, and an adherence to appropriate Isleta cultural protocols.
Due to staff size, hours and facilities are limited.
